Worried about the weather and river levels?

What Richard Benyon, minister for flooding at Defra at the time, tweeted about us on his visit to Morpeth on 6th February 2012.

Morpeth Flood Action Group is more than just about the flood defences. We look to address all aspects of flooding and tackle them for the benefit of the whole community. To be able to do this we need the help of all the residents in Morpeth, if you know of any flood problems or just need advice please contact us

On the 5th and 6th of September 2008 Morpeth found itself at the centre of the most intensive rainfall in living memory. There was extensive flooding throughout the town centre, where over 950 properties were directly affected.

Members of the community came together immediately afterwards to form the Morpeth Flood Action Group. Its aim to address flooding issues and provide a voice for the community.

Latest updates

Some properties adjacent to the Cotting Burn were flooded 3 times in 4 years. We were not entirely satisfied with the proposals in the main scheme for the burn and were looking for improvements.

We collected a petition signed by over 150 residents, who are directly affected, asking for at least a 1 in 100yr protection. This level of protection has now been included in the scheme, work will start Spring 2016.

We don’t think much of the EA data. A lot of Morpeth properties that didn’t flood in 2008 (1 in 137yr return) are registered as 1 in 30 year risk of flooding.
