Who in their right mind would consider building a superstore behind this former local amenity?

Insurance
Insurance is becoming the big issue, not just for us but everyone who has been affected by flooding in the past. Contrary to the Statement of Principles insurance companies are refusing renewals, hiking up premiums and excesses, not passing on policies to new buyers and generally not being cooperative. Come 2013, unless the government does something about it, things will only get worse.
Together with Morpeth Town Council and Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade, Morpeth Flood Action Group has produced a proposal for the future of flood insurance. It is being supported by the National Flood Forum who will be circulating it round affiliated groups for consultation. The original model was presented at one of the working groups that the government set up to consider all things flooding and affordable insurance. The version 2 model has now been presented to Defra.

We are taking a lead on the insurance issues. We conducted a survey on premiums and excesses in October 2010, two years after the event, and we have produced a proposal for insurance post the Statement of Principles.
The original proposal has been superseded by Version 2

Drainage
We have long had issues about Morpeth’s drainage system. It doesn’t work.
A planning application for an extension to the sewage works has recently been approved. We feel that the infrastructure for getting the stuff there should take priority.
In September 2008 large areas of the town had raw sewage enter properties. This is an ongoing problem that the action group is trying to address with all the relevant bodies.
