ENVIRONMENT AGENCY NEWS RELEASE (from agenda for NRFDC meeting 15th October 2010)
FLOOD WARNING SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS
New Flood Warning Codes
Following extensive public, professional partner and Ministerial consultation, new flood warning codes will be launched in late Autumn 2010 and will comprise the following main stages:
Flood Alert – to raise awareness to the possibility of flooding and encourage early preparations to be made by those at highest risk.
Flood Warning – to tell people that flooding is expected and to take action.
Severe Flood Warning – to tell people that flooding is posing a significant risk to life or causing significant disruption to communities which could pose a risk to life.
A lot of work has gone into revising our systems and procedures to accommodate the new codes and make them deliverable from late Autumn. We will be contacting existing customers in October/November to check their registration details and prompt them to find out more about their flood warning service.
Severe Flood Warnings may be issued for a wide range of circumstances and serve not only as warnings of widespread flooding but also of prevailing risks to life arising from flood events (e.g. the loss of bridges and other infrastructure as in the Cumbria Flood of November 2009)
