The Case for Morpeth’s Flood Defences

This document was produced by members of Morpeth Flood Action Group for presentation to Rt. Hon. Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs, on his visit to Morpeth 11 May 2009.

For a copy of the presentation click the image.

For a copy of the press coverage go to the Morpeth Herald site.

New drop in opening hours at the New Life Christian Centre. It is only open 10am to 2pm Mondays and Wednesdays. Paul Hendy of the National Flood Forum will be in attendance most of the day on Mondays so drop in during opening times or make an appointment if you need his advice

Morpeth Flood Action Group has come down firmly in favour of a flood alleviation scheme that includes upstream storage. The trouble with the EA options is that the upstream dams will only restrict the water coming in to Morpeth from the Upper Wansbeck and Hart Burn catchments.

There are no plans, for various reasons, to have upstream storage on the Font.

We need walls in because if there were a 1 in 200 year deluge on the Font catchment area parts of Morpeth would still flood.

For more information on this got to our Flood Alleviation web page.

Graham Butler of the Met Office made a presentation to the committee on Monday 18th May. For the press release of that meeting click HERE.

We are intending to be around on Fair Day (13 June) demonstrating our Blue Line initiative. Details of this are yet to be finalised.

The Environment Agency has agreed for us to publish section 1 of their document about the various options for the flood alleviation scheme. It goes in to a bit more detail than the leaflets they handed out at the public consultation. To download a copy click on the image to the right.

Geoff Parkin is getting close to releasing his initial findings on where the water came from. He is hoping to have information about the Greens fairly soon. We will keep you posted.
